Isaac Babel:
Benya Krik, The Gangster, and Other Stories
Edited by Avraham Yarmolinsky
Babel portrays the collision of old Russian traditions and the Jewish spirit with the new forces of the revolution.
"The Jewish gangs of the Moldavanka were famous; they made upon the young Babel an ineradicable impression and to them he devoted a remarkable group of stories." So wrote Lionel Trilling in his memorable essay on the genius of Isaac Babel. Here is that remarkable group of stories, in which Babel balances the image of Jewish violence against the violence done to Jews who are so Jewish that they cannot help but be "nonviolent." Benya Krik, the great Jewish gangster, is a very tough guy who can smash things up. But on the other end of the scale is, for example, "The History of My Dovecot," the heartrending story of a pogrom seen through the eyes of a boy. The last four stories portray, in Babel's immortal style of calm and hard compassion, the collision of the Jewish spirit with the muscle of the Russian Revolution.
